How Gujarat/India is growing in Solar Energy Creation

How Gujarat/India is growing in Solar Energy Creation

India is blessed with immense solar radiation with its energy potential of around 5000 trillion KWh per year. The rays are directly incident over the territory of India with most parts getting 4 – 7 KWh per square meter each day. As the industrial age embarked, the use of sunlight as a source of energy started thriving. And in recent past India achieved 5th position in Solar power deployment by surpassing Italy according to a report in Ministry of new and renewable energy. The capacity of Solar power has not only increased manifold but the current solar tariff has made the market competitive and has achieved grid parity. The capacity has grown by more than 11 times in the past 5 years and is valued at 2.6 GW in March 2014 to 30 GW in March 2019.

Precisely this sector in India has made an appearance as one of the most significant players in the grid connected power generation capacity in the trend. It has created a visible impact and has led India in the path of Sustainable development. Apparently solar energy is a solution to entire country’s energy needs.
According to National Institute of solar energy the solar potential of India is about 748 GW assuming 3% of waste land. National Solar Mission is a prominent initiative by Government of India launched on 11 January 2010.

How Gujarat/India is growing in Solar Energy Creation

It involves functional involvement and participation of states of India to promote ecological sustainable growth in accordance the Country’s energy needs. It is also a global effort towards climate change and reducing emission intensity. The objective of this mission is to set up India as a worldwide pioneer in Solar Energy creation in short span of time. Moreover the mission targets to introduce 100 GW grids connected solar power plants by the year 2022. The country’s solar deployment has reached to 34,404 GW according to a statistics report of 29th February 2020.India has the lowest capital cost per MW globally to install solar plants.

Let us have a glance at the development and status of India in the Renewable energy sector :-

  • Gujarat is all set to have India’s largest renewable energy generation park with generation capacity of 30 GW that would be spread on 72,600 hectares with exclusive zone for solar energy storage. The Gujarat government has been a key player to increase the solar power generation. In December 2020 the government announced a new policy lifting restrictions on the capacity of solar power generation as part of its target of producing 30,000 MW by 2022.

  • India managed to add 2320 MW of Solar capacity amidst covid 19 pandemic from January 2020- September 2020.

  • Under Union budget 2021-2022 the government has provided an additional capital infusion of Rs 1000 crores to Solar Enenrgy Corporation of India.

  • India plans to add 30 GW renewable energy capacity on its western borders like Gujarat Rajasthan.
  • NTPC is anticipated to commission India’s largest floating Solar Power plant in Ramagundam Telangana by May-June 2022 and the total installed capacity is expected to be 447 MW.

  • In March 2021 Adani Green energy declared a plan to acquire a 250 MW solar power project in Rajasthan. Additionally they signed a contract to acquire 100% stake in Sky Power Globe’s 50 MW solar plant in Telangana.

  • The Solar Energy Corporation of India implemented large scale auctions for solar parks and awarded contracts for 47 parks with over 25 GW of combined capacity.

  • In November 2020 Ladakh got the largest solar power project setup under the Central’s government ‘Make in India’ initiative at Leh Indian Air Force Station with a capacity of 1.5 MW

Various large scale sustainable power projects are being undertaken in different parts of the country to make a paradigm shift towards Green India. This transition requires consistent efforts scaled towards gross improvement of the sector as a whole.
Gujarat ranks 5th in the country in terms of Solar power capacity after Karnataka, Telangana, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh. In addition to that Gujarat was reported to be the top state in deployment of solar power installations. The Kutch solar project is anticipated to the world’s largest solar park. Gujarat is a Power surplus state. Read along to scan the rationality.
In terms of energy Gujarat has undergone massive transformation in the past few decades. Due to rapid industrialization Gujarat has become one of the leading states in revolutionizing the energy sector. It is one of the best places for investments and development projects with active inclination and support from the Government leading to stable economy. Moreover Ahmedabad is known as the Financial Capital of the state. The state of Gujarat accounts for about 9% of total energy requirement in India. The total solar energy generation of the state accounts to 2654 MW and they are planning to revamp their renewable energy creation to about 30,000 MW by 2022.
In March 2020 Gujarat was top drawer for domestic rooftop solar installation. With the total of 50,915 which is about 64% of the country’s 70,950 installations. It is backing India in accomplishing its target of 100 GW of solar capacity of which 40 GW has been planned through rooftop by gazing its eyes for 8024 MW by 2022, pulling in 3200 MW through rooftop segment. Its greatest single solar power generation capacity is in Patan’s district Charanka solar park that has current production of 600 MW. The government of Gujarat put in considerable efforts in uplifting the state in terms of energy sector. Lately their initiative of new solar policy extended additional benefits to the residential, individual and commercial developers or power producers by removing capacity ceiling for setting up a solar project and allowed consumers to lease out their roofs or establishments to third party for generation and consumption of power in the same premises for the next 5 years from 2021 till December 2025. Besides State government also approved the group ownership of solar projects on the basis of their ratio of ownership for self consumption. The energy cost has also been reduced to 4.5 per unit from 8 per unit. In addition to that the security deposit by a developer to a power distribution company has also been reduced to 5 lakh per MW from 25 lakh per MW. The government is harvesting its solar potential and finally kicking off leaving no stone unturned in achieving its target.
To edify the Solar sector and uplift its segments there are diverse companies out there providing end to end services and solutions to all the energy needs of the consumers for example Solar EPC companies aids in solar power installation in commercial or industrial establishments right from scratch to its finance till the project is fully operational and its requisite timely maintenance.
